Open Bands Eisteddfod a Fantastic Concert

Canberra City Band is again Canberra’s champion, after taking out the Open A Grade section at the Australian National Eisteddfod.

Conducted by Greg Stenning, they played a five-movement tone poem Of Sailors and Whales by Francis McBeth.  Ginninderra Wind Orchestra placed second.

In other Open Concert Band sections the Hunter Wind Ensemble and Hunter School of the Performing Arts Junior Concert Band took out the Open B and C Grade sections respectively.

Canberra Brass and Victoria Street Brass again won the Open Brass Band sections.  Hunter School of the Performing Arts Stage Band won the Open A Grade Jazz Bands, and Daramalan College Open B Grade.  In the Open Orchestras James McCusker Orchestra won Open Orchestras, Merici College Advanced String Ensemble Open String Ensembles and Hunter School of the Performing Arts String Orchestra Open String Orchestras.

Most sections were judged on a non-competitive basis.  Distribution of awards in these was evenly spread, with 2 platinum awards for outstanding performances, 13 gold, 41 silver, 18 bronze and 2 participation awards.

Main Adjudicator Andrew Snell was impressed by the high standard of groups and performance throughout the event. “I was amazed by not only the standard of performances, but also by the incredible numbers of young people performing over the weekend, and the large number of schools represented. There is clearly some very fine music education taking place in the ACT and this is vital for the future of music in Australia.”

Other Eisteddfod events (Choirs, Singing, Piano and Speech & Drama) will take place in August and September.

The Eisteddfod thanks the ACT Government through artsACT for its support which helps facilitate use of Llewellyn Hall for this event, and the other partners, Better Music and Quest Apartments, whose support help make the event possible.
