Over 50 school and community choirs from Canberra, Newcastle, Sydney and Goulburn came together to present outstanding choral music in the Australian National Eisteddfod on August 17-18.
In the competitive Open age (adult) sections the University of Newcastle’s Echology Choir achieved a rare feat.
The chamber choir of 18 members sang beautifully to win all five Open Age sections they entered, including the Australian Open Choral Challenge. Led by Benjamin Lambert they performed a total of 11 pieces, ranging in style from sacred to contemporary and popular. The group won a total of $4,000 prizemoney, including $500 in vouchers to buy music or equipment from Better Music. They also won the Open Sacred, Contemporary, Popular and Australia Britain sections. This was a remarkable achievement, particularly as they funded entry fees themselves.
